Dr. Ruud Sprangers

Advanced Technology Engineer Punch Powertrain

Ruud Sprangers received his M.Sc. degree and Ph.D. degree (cum laude) from Eindhoven University of Technology in 2011 and 2015, respectively. He then started working for Punch Powertrain as an Advanced Technology Engineer in 2016, where he has been involved in many projects related to electric drives and electric machine design. These projects typically focus on a combination of research and development, and are often executed in collaboration with academic partners and other research institutes. In one of his latest projects, he worked on the development and validation of an automated optimization platform for electric motors in collaboration with several other colleagues. The results of these efforts are presented during his presentation at CWIEME Berlin.

Multi-disciplinary Design Optimization: Exploring the Pareto-Front

  • To design our next-gen of innovative and affordable electric powertrains, the availability of a multi-disciplinary design platform is of key importance 
  • With such a platform, Punch Powertrain is able to make trade-offs between a multitude of design criteria, including performance, cost, efficiency, thermals, structural integrity and NVH 
  • For a given set of design requirements and constraints, Pareto-fronts can be generated and explored to find the most suitable solution(s) 
  • To perform the required calculations, the simulation process leans strongly on efficient parallelization of the analysis effort 
  • Altair Flux plays a major role in this process, and in particular in the electromagnetic analysis of the motor design 
  • During the presentation, an overview will be given of the main features and capabilities of the developed optimization platform
