Dr. DeeDee Smith

E-mobility Marketing Manager Solvay Materials

Dr. DeeDee Smith is the Emobility Marketing Manager for Solvay Materials and has been with Solvay for 11 years.  DeeDee has a PhD from Northwestern University (Chicago, IL) in organic chemistry and started her career at Solvay working in R&D roles examining sustainable monomers and fillers for next generation polymers.  She has also develop new products in Amodel® PPA, Ryton® PPS, and Ixef® PArA for the automotive market.  After several years in R&D, DeeDee took her technical expertise to a commercial role and worked directly with automotive customers to identify solutions for their applications.   In her current role, she has global responsibility for setting the strategy around Solvay Materials in eMotor applications including insulation materials for EV magnet wire and slot liners.  She works cross-functionally with R&D to design innovative new products for the next generation of eMotors and is passionate about working directly with customers to bring new concepts to market.

Increase Cu Slot Fill and Improved Thermal Performance of eMotors: Solvay's Ajedium™ PEEK Slot liners

  • For eMotor designers, small improvements in power and efficiency can have real world tangible benefits like weight savings and increased range
  • Solvay has been working with eMotor designers to evaluate Ajedium™ PEEK slot liners effectiveness as a high voltage, high temperature slot insulation material for eMotors in electric vehicles
  • EV industry shifts from 400 volt systems to 800 volts or higher, it's clear that traditional paper and paper laminates are not optimised for these new environments
  • Ajedium™ PEEK slot liners can help bridge this gap by offering similar electrical and mechanical performance at much lower thicknesses, in some cases this can be decreased by as much as ⅔ the thickness of incumbent solutions
  • Ajedium™ PEEK slot liners have improved thermal conductivity, more than 3x that of current laminated and paper systems to help reduce the overall e.motor temperature
