Dr. Nir Vaks is the Global Director of Carpenter Electrification and the leader of the Soft Magnetics Centre of Excellence and Technology Center, and is responsible for driving Carpenter Electrification innovations, products, and revenue growth through engineering, product development, collaboration, and project management. Currently, he leads the company’s multi-million dollar investments in the area of electrification, directing a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and other technical experts to deliver innovative new products and processes. His team’s efforts include new product development in the areas of power generation, electrification of land and air vehicles, thermal management, and groundbreaking magnetic, electric, and thermal alloy development.

Unlocking EV Performance Improvement: Motor Optimisation Using Torque Dense Materials and Advanced Powertrain Technology

  • Higher power and torque density in advanced electric motors for land, air, and naval electric vehicles, along with increased efficiency are of key importance to improve the vehicle performance
  • Recent advancements in the processing of thin laminated stator and rotor stacks have been paramount in enabling optimal motor performance.
  • Examples of power dense and high efficiency motors using high performance soft magnetic alloys will be presented in detail:
  • High induction, high permeability, and low loss soft magnetic stator and rotor materials to increase the torque and power density of the motor in combination with improved efficiency
  • Various options will be presented to realise the torque and power benefits by about 15-35% using such high-performance material solutions vs. current technology
  • These high-performance motors can result in improved electric vehicle performance such as higher acceleration, improved range, higher payload capacity, and increased space
